Description	:	Born in 1920 to Stoy and Hattie Robinson, Bill was the fourth of five children that included Melvin, Walter, Howard and Wilma, all of whom predeceased him. Bill graduated from Flat Creek High School in rural Kershaw County and attended Clemson University briefly before leaving to join the war effort. Read More	Born in 1920 to Stoy and Hattie Robinson, Bill was the fourth of five children that included Melvin, Walter, Howard and Wilma, all of whom predeceased him. Bill graduated from Flat Creek High School in rural Kershaw County and attended Clemson University briefly before leaving to join the war effort. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served throughout WWII in the China-Burma-India theatre as an airplane mechanic. He received a field promotion to sergeant during his tour of duty. After the war, he returned to his wife Mary, whom he had married shortly before shipping out overseas, and a two-year-old daughter he had never seen. From their home in Arcadia, California, he worked at a variety of construction-related jobs until 1953, when he joined the City of Arcadia Fire Department. Over the next twenty-two years, he rose to the rank of Captain and was honored for his distinguished service. He was a member of the Arcadia Friends Church, and a 32nd Degree Mason. After his retirement, Bill and Mary returned to the family home near Kershaw, South Carolina and Bill became an active volunteer in the Flat Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He led the organization for many years as president and in other executive roles. Among his many accomplishments, he headed the effort to build the Charlesboro Substation. He was instrumental in acquiring grants for the needed equipment and training to improve response time to emergencies as well as reduce fire insurance premiums in the Charlesboro community. An exceptional craftsman, engineer, builder and all around handyman, Bill gave countless hours of his time over decades to individuals and organizations, repairing, rebuilding, and many times creating something out of nothing to solve a problem or help someone out. Scores of porches, staircases, and railings – not to mention tables, counters and other items of furniture — will live on as testament to his skill and worldview. His often-repeated philosophy of unselfish service was, "Don't worry…don't hurry…let me help." Habitually upbeat, optimistic and funny, people enjoyed being around Bill and it was no wonder he had so many friends throughout his life. A lover of music, Bill owned several instruments and played them all — and would do so with the smallest encouragement and great enthusiasm, alone, or in spontaneous jam sessions on the porch.
