In 1784 when William was ten, his father became provincial secretary of the new province of New Brunswick. The family's finances kept William from having a university education and instead turned him to a career in government service. In 1793, at age 18, he was appointed deputy clerk of the Supreme Court, becoming clerk in 1796 until 1819. In 1802 he was also appointmented clerk of the Legislative Council and a notary public. He studied law privately and was became an attorney in 1804. By 1807 his father Jonathan was 70 years old and unable to keep up with his work, so William had increasingly to assume the job of the provincial secretary's office and by 1812 was appointed provincial secretary. He enjoyed the outdoors, and sometimes as a young man acted as a deputy surveyor for the government. In 1818 he became principal surveyor for the British in the determination of the boundary with the United States. His daughter Elizabeth married widower Thomas Baillie in 1832. From 1837 to 1842 he had to work with a lieutenant governor and councillors whose liberal views were repugnant to him. His eldest son was William Hunter Odell. William Odell died on Christmas Day, 1844. The Odell name is known for bureaucracy, learning, and gentility in early New Brunswick. William spent his working life producing and directing the flow of official papers through which the government controlled the province. Between them his father Jonathan and William held the office of provincial secretary for 60 years. New Brunswick continues to be reminded of this outdoorsman-courtier-bureaucrat through the existence of Odell Park and Game Refuge in the heart of Fredericton, once William's farm, a 300-acre property where the natural forest is preserved.
