F Phillips, a licensed preacher in the Methodist church, lost his life from "choke damps" in his well Friday morning last. The well was sixty-five feet deep and Mr. Phillips thought the gas was out before he went down. The following account has been furnished us: Last Friday morning, May 11, William F. Phillips, living on the farm of Nathan Morris, half mile west of Leatherwood station, on the I.D. & W railway, made preparations to clean out the well. After making the necessary arrangements, he entered the well, descended to the bottom, and filled the bucket with such material as was found necessary to be removed. His brother and wife on top drew the bucket up, emptied it and returned it the 'second time. Again he filled it, they drawing it up and returning it a third time. Receiving no signal to raise it the wife became alarmed and said to the brother, "There is something the matter with William." She called loudly to him, but got no response. At that time a man was passing by and Mrs. Phillips called to him for help. Help soon arrived and the brother soon descended into the well with a rope secured around his body for the purpose of attaching a rope to the body of William, but failed. He was drawn to the top almost suffocated. This was about 8:30 a.m. The body of William was extracted at 12:30 p.m. a corpse. William was a minister in the M.E. church, a consistent man, a beloved husband and a kind father. He leaves a wife and four small children, a father, mother, brothers and sisters bereft. The funeral took place Sunday at 2 p.m. at Linebarger chapel, services by Revs. H.C. Riley and George Linebarger. An immense throng of sympathizing friends followed him to his last resting place.
