Becker, perhaps the best known and most thorough mechanic in the city, died suddenly at his home, 1115 Benton street, early Sunday morning. Death was caused by blood poisoning. On the previous Monday morning he arose early to wait upon a sick member of the family, and in some way stubbed one of his toes in the darkness. Nothing was thought of the incident at the time, but later the injury began to pain him and a physician was called. It was found that the nail had been driven back into the flesh and that blood poison had resulted. A consultation of physicians were held and everything possible done to save his life, but he grew rapidly worse until he passed away Sunday morning. The funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and from the German Lutheran church at 2:00 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. Erbe, and the remains laid to rest in East Linwood cemetery. William Fred Becker, was born in Lyons, Iowa, May 30, 1862, and was in his 49th year at the time of his death. Later the family removed to Illinois, and when he was twelve years old they came to Boone and he made his home here until his death. He attended the public schools and then took up black smithing. He was recognized as one of the best mechanics and forgers in the country and his services were sought far and wide. March 5, 1885, he was united in marriage with Miss Ida Kill of this city, who with five children, Minnie, Emma, Ida, George and Fred, also his aged mother and one sister, Mrs. John z, survive to mourn his sad and untimely death. He was of a genial but quiet and unassuming nature and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The sympathy of a host of friends is given the sorrowing family in their bereavement.
