Description	:	William Fred Gilbert Literary figure, William Fred Gilbert, was the fourth child of eight children born to Sillman (b.1834 in Connecticut and d.1921 in Washington) and Emily Rundle Gilbert (b.1844 in Pennsylvania and d.1927 in Washington). William had three brothers--Christopher, David, and Charles; and four sisters--Stella, Elizabeth, Ada, and Luella. The oldest siblings were born in Minnesota. Elizabeth and Ada were born in Wisconsin. Luella, the youngest child, was born in South Dakota. On March 4, 1892 in Ainsworth, Brown County, Nebraska; Fred married Arianna Janssen Heeren who was born in Ogle County, Illinois and lived in the German Valley, Illinois area while growing up. Fred and Arianna had three children--Emily, Harold, and Elden; all born in Nebraska. Fred died of Bright's disease, a condition which elevates blood pressure. Laura Ingalls Wilder included Fred and his brother, her childhood friends, in several books of her Little House on the Prairie series--such as "Little Town On The Prairie", "The Long Winter", and "These Happy Golden Years." ### From the Curator of Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, DeSmet, S. Dak. ". . . I have found pictures and information about Fred Gilbert. Firstly, the Gilberts and the Ingalls ( Find A Grave Memorial# 3950 and Find A Grave Memorial# 3951) were friends long before they came to De Smet, South Dakota. In the LORE volume 6 number 2, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society newsletter, is a report about David Gilbert (Find A Grave Memorial# 5023544), Fred's brother. The newsletter includes some other interesting information about Fred Gilbert: "In addition to her gifts, Hazel Gilbert Failing (Fred's niece and David's daughter) has always had a fund of stories and information for us. It was she who traced back the long friendship of the Ingalls and the Gilberts – way back to Wisconsin, when her grandparents lived in the Pepin area and across the lake at Lake City, Minnesota. A faded old photo of a log cabin school in the woods shows the Gilberts and Ingallses as classmates, long before the families were reunited on the prairies. In De Smet, Laura's chums included the Gilbert sister, Stella; but it was Fred, exactly Laura's (Find A Grave Memorial# 1625) age, who held her true affection. In her eighties, Laura (Find A Grave Memorial# 1625); laughingly admitted to a crush on Hazel's Uncle Fred, to who one of her girl friends was already smitten! Fred, who died at a young age, lies buried just across the path from the Ingalls family members in De Smet." Laura, of course, refers to Laura Ingalls Wilder (Find A Grave Memorial# 1625); meaning that Laura had a crush on this member of your family!" ### Newspaper Clipping Announcing Fred's Demise W. F. Gilbert, who leased the mill at this place and lived here several years ago, moving from here to Silver Creek, this state, died there Sept. 26, of heart failure, aged 32 years. He leaves a wife and three children. At the time of his death he was chairman of both town and school boards and was an active member of the Congregational church and the M. W. A. Mrs. Gilbert writes us that he had been very successful in the mill of which he owned a half interest, and had just reached the point where he could take life easy. He and his family had made all arrangements to spend the winter in California and were to start in three days, when he was suddenly taken sick, and after ten days illness died. The remains were taken to DeSmet, S. Dakota, where his parents reside. Personally the editor of this paper feels the loss of a dear friend and a man whom we regarded as one of nature's noblemen. The obituary is believed to have been found in an 1899 Nebraska newspaper. It is thought the location of this newspaper may have been one published in Valentine, Nebraska, as the Gilberts lived at that location for awhile. ###
