The body of Fred Sterns, who died at Albuquerque, N. M., yesterday, will probably arrive here Monday and will be interred in the Nevada cemetery, after services which will be in charge of the American Legion, from the Memorial Lutheran church. News of the death was received yesterday evening from the wife by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Peterson. The marriage of Fred Sterns and Miss Olga Peterson was the culmination of a wartime romance he being a service man and she a Red Cross nurse. Following their marriage they lived in Lincoln, Nebr., for a time, after which tuberculosis which he had contracted, while in the service, developed. They had been at Eugene, Oregon, for a time where he had been taking treatments at a tuberculosis hospital. From there thy had gone to San Diego, Calif., where they had spent a year before going to Albuquerque, where they had been but a few days before death. He had been accompanied by his wife and his parents during his search for health. He leaves besides his wife, a daughter, Martha and son "Billy" besides his parents and other relatives. From Nevada Evening Journal May 21, 1924 (page 4) STERNS FUNERAL TUESDAY Nevada Post American Legion in Charge of Interment Funeral services for William Fredrick Sterns, who died at Albuquerque, N. M., Thursday, May 15 was held from the Memorial Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon and interment was in the Nevada cemetery, under the regulation services of Nevada Post No. 48, American Legion. The sermon was preached by Dr. C. N. Swihart, who had married Mr. and Mrs. Sterns about four years ago. Music was by a quartette of ladies. Mrs. Sterns with her two children Martha Francis and "Billy" and Mr. Sterns' parents Mr. and Mrs. Sterns Sr., arrived in the city with body Monday morning. William Fredrick Sterns was born in Slater, Saline county, Missouri Oct. 18, 1892 and died at Albuquerque, New Mexico May 15, 1924. He was aged 31 years and 7 months. During early manhood he lived in Moline, Ill., with his parents working in the government arsenal of that place. On June 16, 1917 he volunteered for military service entering the service of his country at Davenport, Ia. After almost one year training at Fort Riley, Kansas he was sent over seas with Evacuation Hospital No. 7. He served at Sgt. First class in the Quartermaster's Dept. of this organization until the time of his discharge at Camp Dodge, Ia., May 14, 1919. On Sept. 9, 1910 he was united marriage with Olga V. Peterson at Nevada, Ia. For several months they made their home in Omaha, Nebr. While here he was received into the fellowship of the English Lutheran church by the rite of baptism. Because of failing health it was found advisable to seek the benefits of western climate. But all that climate conditions, medical skill and loving hands could do was to no avail. More than three years ravages of tuberculosis proved to be more than physical strength could endure. Last Thursday morning the heart suddenly failed and he passed quietly from this life. His is survived by his wife, two children Martha Frances and William George, his father and mother and many other relatives and friends.
