The first river tragedy of the season occurred Sunday afternoon when a boat containing Miss Irene Wells, 19 years old, 2709 South First Street; Garland Eaton, 2103 South First Street; his brother, Orville Eaton, and Miss Ruth Spork, 2410 South First Street, capsized in Eel River near Jasonville, Ind., resulting in the drowning of Miss Wells and Garland Eaton. The victims were members of a picnic party, composed of Eaton's parents, the two couples and other residents of Jasonville. The four young people had left the party and had gone quite a distance down the river to obtain a row boat tied to a log in the river. The girls had preceded the young men into the boat and were seated when the brothers stepped into the boat. As it was given a vigorous push from the bank the boat turned turtle, precipitating all four into the river. Orville Eaton grasped Miss Spork and succeeded in getting her safely to shore but efforts to rescue Miss Wells and Garland Eaton were futile. Bodies Recovered. Members of the family said Miss Wells locked her arms about the neck of Eaton and both sank. The boat was but four or five feet from the bank when it capsized. The body of Miss Wells was found after a search lasting about an hour. Eaton's body was found about two hours later, farther down the river. The bodies were taken to the Woods' undertaking establishment in Jasonville and about midnight the body of Miss Wells was sent to the home of her brother, Clyde Wells, 2501 South Second Street. The body of Eaton was sent to the home of his parents, near Jasonville. Miss Wells was an employee of the Vandalia Coal company in the capacity of telephone operator and was a daughter of Mrs. Frances Wells, a widow. She had been an employee of the Vandalia Coal company for a number of years and as a token of its esteem the company granted Miss Wells a half holiday each Saturday. Saturday was the first she had enjoyed. The Vandalia company, it was announced, will make all arrangements for the funeral of Miss Wells, which will be held Tuesday afternoon; burial in Hull Cemetery. Eaton was an employee of the stamping mill during the summer vacation of the Indiana State Normal School, where he was preparing himself as a teacher. He lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chastain. Besides the mother, Miss Wells is survived by four brothers, Clyde, Ray, Jessie and Homer, and a younger sister, Dora. The funeral will be held at the home of the brother, Clyde, Tuesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Hull Cemetery south of the city. The funeral of Eaton, who is survived by the parents and his brother, Orville, will be held Tuesday morning in Sullivan, Ind.
