Mr. Garrison was one of the pioneers of Colorado and Douglas county.He was born in New York state, but started West at an early day, keeping pace with the tide of immigration and finally crossed the plains to Denver among the early comers and went into the merchantile business there, but after a few years sold out and moved to Douglas county and has remained here ever since, a respected and honored citizen. He served the county one term as commissioner, but for the last few years his health has not permitted him to take an active part in public matters. After his health failed he sold his farm, a few miles south of Castle Rock, upon which he had lived for 24 yours, and moved into town where he had a nice home in which to spend his last days. The funeral was conducted Thursday by Rev. J. A . Long, and was well attended, notwithstanding the rain which kept many away. Ho leaves here a wife, and sister, Mrs. N. L. Wright, and a nephew, Mr. Gila Garrison, to mourn their loss. He has also, we believe, children that are not here. -Castle Rock Journal, June 10, 1891 p1 Dear Mr. Mohler: The article on the early history of Douglas County contained in the April 3rd edition, received this evening, and, of course, interesting. The first settlement within the present boundaries of Douglas County was at Franktown. However, the site of the first settler is the ground on which are located the improvements of the ranch recently owned by M. Monk, at Douglas Station, 2 3/4 miles south of Castle Rock. This was a squatters claim made by William Garrison. For some time he was the only white settler between Denver and Pueblo. The settlement at Denver had not yet taken place, but there were descendants of the early Spanish at and near Pueblo. Mr. Garrison was engaged in freighting in the early 50s and in passing through the country was impressed by the spring and sub-irrigated meadow; which existed at that time before the creek channel deepened enough to drain it. Several of the 59s who had just squatted on land on West Plum Creek; were surprised to see an improved and well stocked place, when they happened onto the ridge which separates the two valleys. Mr. Garrison had already established an Indian trading post. As the times demanded, Mr. Garrison was a rugged individualist and played a conspicuous part in the maintenance of law and order in the earliest days of the county. A remotely located railroad had almost succeeded in saddling the County with a severe bonded indebtedness, but, by the tireless canvassing of the County, he together with Mr. George Ratcliffe, prevented it. Mr. Richard Clarke is the only living Douglas Countian who knew Mr. Garrison. He and his brother, Colonel, were the first purchasers of the ranch.
