Description	:	Son of John Gates. William Gates was born March 17, 1842, in Ireland. When he ws three years of age, he emigrated with his parents to Canada. There he reached maturity and learned his tade of blacksmithing. He married Miss Agnes Malloy, a native of Scotland, born November 1, 1843. When he ws three years of age, he emigrated with his parents to Canada. There he reached maturity and learned his tade of blacksmithing. He married Miss Agnes Malloy, a native of Scotland, born November 1, 1843. They had four children, on dying in infancy, one daughter Mabel, and two sons, William R. and Fred. Shortly after their marriage they came to Cedar Rapids and then to Nevada. They resided in Nevada a few months and then returned to Canada. They soon came back to Nevada where they resided until their death. Upon his return to Nevada, he engaged in a very successful blacksmith business which he turned over to his sons upon his retirement. The family had a a large farm southeast of town. William was six times mayor and elected to city council innumerable times. He was public spirited and an invaluable promoter for the Nevada community. He so instilled that community spirit in his family that his daughter, Mabel Gates Wadsworth, even after being removed from Nevada for many years, left the city funds for construction of a hall to serve the school and the community. Those funds were used to construct Gates Hall in Nevada.
