Civil War Records indicate on 11 Apr 1865 he was wounded and admitted to Yandell Hospital at Meridian, Mississippi. On 04 May 1865, while under the Command of Captain J. W. Gudger, his unit, along with numerous others, surrendered to Union Forces at Citronelle, Alabama; they were taken as Prisoners of War and returned to Mississippi. They were paroled on 09 May 1865 in Meridian, Mississippi. After his release, William would make the arduous journey back to his native North Carolina to his family. He would next appear in the 01 Aug 1870 Jackson County Census; the year before the Deep Creek Community where he lived would become Swain County in February 1871. William is last found in the 23 Jun 1900 Swain County Census.
