William was shot by an assailant in front of the Bloomingdale Church over an altercation between the minister and a man who wanted to court his daughter. He was about 40 years old and left a wife and five children. His death was a homicide. On October 24, 2019, great-niece Teresa returned to his grave site in hopes of uncovering the lost tombstone she remembered being there as a child.
