William's father Nathan was a veteran of the Revolutionary War having been drafted by order of then Virginia Govenor Thomas Jefferson into the regular army from Capt. Cloak's Militia near present day Jeffersonville, W.V.. William (his son) was a veteran of the War of 1812 (Ohio roster of soldiers Capt Robert West's Company (maybe Ross Co.). He served in the same unit John Housh jr whose daug. his son Alexander Brook would later marry. This classifies him as a veteran or the Revolutionary War also. His grave is not marked by any military organization as that of a veteran and should be. William also is recorded in early histories of Brown Co. as an officer in the Brown Co. Militia. He came to Brown co with A Games who was his brother in law. A sister Rachel and then later Nathaniel who had stayed behind to dispose of the family property also came to Brown Co. with him. He purchased by survey 200+ acres of land from the Hiett Family whom had moved there earlier purchasing 2000 acres plus and then sold it to others who followed them. Eventually William married a Hiett female whom had become widowed after his earlier wife died. William operated a saw mill on the waters of Beetle Creek on East Fork Road that written history books record as having competed well with a sawmill built by a D. Boone descendant on the waters of Eagle Creek west of Aberdeen. William in the early to mid 1830's began construction on a two story brick home on the west side of East Fork road just a few miles south of Hiett's Corner. In 1836 the year it was completed he died. By this time his brother Elias had moved his wife Catherine Fry (daug of Rev war veterans Lodowick and George Fry) and their children to Lewis Co. Ky and established a line that grew over time. William's son Nathan William married a Dryden widow and moved to Indiana becoming a well known and respected wealthy land owner and business operator. The brick home William built still stands and is being lived in today. The family cemetary he and other early Gilberts are buried in is just to the right of and uphill from the Brick home at 2823 East Fork Road, Ripley, Ohio 45167. Unfortunately it is in a sad state of disrepair. North 38 degrees 43.029 min' , West 083 degrees, 44.201'. You can use Google Earth and these coordinates to view the house and cemetary. The cemetary is in bad shape from 33 plus years of neglect and lack of upkeep. William is shown on the rolls of Capt. Robert West's company (Ross County?) for the War of 1812. He (and the father of his son AB Gilbert's wife Catherine) are found on the roll roster of men in a company of soldiers from Ross county listed by the state of Ohio as veterans of the War of 1812 (JHG March 2014 addendum).
