Read More	William Gill was born at Nether Broughton, Leicestershire, England, March 23, 1824, died July 9, 1887, aged 63 years, 3 months and 16 days. Mr. Gill was engaged in mercantile business in England and on June 30, 1846 was married to Miss Emma Louisa Porter in St. Peter's church in Derbyshire, and early in 1857 he caught the gold fever and embarked for Australia, where he spent nearly three years, leaving his family at home. There he conducted a general merchandise establishment, and dealt in wines and spirits and bought gold dust from the miners, in all of which he was successful. On Jan. 23, 1860, he sold out his stores and left Melbourne on the ship Ocean Chief, arriving at Liverpool April 7th of the same year, and was met by his family. He engaged in hotel keeping in Derbyshire but could not be contented in his native land and in May 1861 disposed of his interests there and sailed with his family for Canada, and located at Lakefield, Ontario, where he engaged in farming until the fall of 1869 when he moved to Baltimore county, Maryland, where for two years he followed farming and importing sheep from Canada. He exhibited stock at all the principal fairs of Maryland and Virginia and was very successful in securing prizes. It wa during his exhibitions at these fairs that he first became interested in Nebraska, which was well represented at such places by land agents who claimed it to be the land flowing with milk and honey. Mr. Gill became much interested in the account of Nebraska and in March 1873 accompanied by his family he left Maryland for Lincoln, Nebraska, and finally located on the farm which he owned at the time of his death. He engaged in stock raising and was one of the first to introduce short-horn cattle into this country and was quite successful in his ventures. Last spring he decided to retire from the farm, and lease his land to his youngest son and engaged in business in Ulysses. On Wed., July 6, he came down to this city and went out to see how matters were on the farm and while thus engaged he was much affected by the heat. On Friday he intended to return to Ulysses, but while at the depot P. Unitt met him and invited him to go home with him and spend the night. Mrs. Gill and daughter came up from Lincoln and they all went to Mr. Unitt's. A pleasant evening was spent and about one o'clock he was feeling very well. Near morning Mrs. Gill heard him groan and at once tried to rouse him without avail. She called the family and medical assistance was sent for but it was no use and about eight o'clock Saturday morning he breathed his last. The community was shocked to hear of his sudden death and a large circle of friends and acquaintances extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. Nebraska Reporter, Seward, NE, Thur, July 14, 1887
