Description	:	WALNUT COVE-Mr. William "Bill" Glidewell Mabe, 71, died Wednesday at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Mabe was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Stokes County to the late Leff Bob Mabe and Minnie Glidewell Mabe. In 1982,, his health forced him to retire from Piedmont Airlines after 23 years of service. Read More	WALNUT COVE-Mr. William "Bill" Glidewell Mabe, 71, died Wednesday at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Mabe was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Stokes County to the late Leff Bob Mabe and Minnie Glidewell Mabe. In 1982,, his health forced him to retire from Piedmont Airlines after 23 years of service. He also was a retired farmer and the owner of Mabe' s Strawberries. He was proud to be called "Strawberry Bill". He was one of the original strawberry growers in North Carolina and served as the former president of the North Carolina Strawberry growers in North Carolina and served as the former president of the North Carolina Strawberry Growers Association. He served as former Governor Jim Martin's campaign manager in Stokes County in 1983. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by then Governor Martin. He served on the Governor's Drivers License Task Force Committee and the board of directors of the Stokes County Health Department. He was a member of Palmyra United Methodisst Church, where he served on the building fund for several years and helped organize Boy Scout Troop No. 408. Of all his accomplishments, his pride and joy was his granchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Rupert Maxie Mabe and Crae Mabe. Survivors include his wife, Emma Lou Southern Mabe of the home; four daughters, Debbie and husband Bill Medlin of Monroe, Tina and husband Paul Tamer of Walnut Cove, Cindy and husband Bob Koehler of Lincolnton and Christy and husband Mike Rogers of Walnut Cove; seven grandchildre, Steve and Brian Medlin, Zack and Tara Koehler, Sarah Tamer and Justin and Nicole Rogers; and sisters and brothers Lourene Wolfington of Lake Norman, Arvie Boone of Germanton, Robert Chal Mabe of High Point and Jack Mabe of Lake Norman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Palmyra United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack Danley and the Rev. Jim Purdy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the W. G. Mabe Memorial Fund, c/o Palmyra United Methodist Church. (Winston-Salem Journal, May 30, 2002)
