Interment in Magnolia Cemetery. William Goodwyn Calhoun was born Nov 16, 1858 in Talladega, Alabama, then the home of his parents Motte Campbell McGehee Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth Goodwyn Calhoun. Though born in Alabama, practically all of Mr Calhoun's life was spent in Greenwood, the home of his father and grandfather. His father, Motte Campbell McGehee Calhoun removed to Alabama as a young man in the early fifties and was married to Miss Goodwyn in 1856 in Downs County, Alabama. When the war began young Calhoun volunteered in an Albama Regiment and was promoted to Lieutenant and saw service in some of the most important battles of he war. He was twice wounded in the beginning of the war and was severely wounded at the Battle of Sharpsburg. From the effects of this wound, he died in September 1866 in Harpersville, Alabama leaving a widow and three little children. William Goodwyn aged 8, the late Roland R Calhoun and the late Mrs J Thomas Duckett (Gussie) all of whom subsequently made their home in Greenwood with their grandfather, the late Dr Ephraim Ramsey Calhoun and one of Greenwood's first and most public spirited citizens. Dr E R Calhoun was a member of the Calhoun family of the famous Long Canes Community of Abbeville County and was born in that community. He was a grandson of William Calhoun, one of the four brothers who first settle in that section. William Goodwyn Calhoun was in the drug business here for some time and later served 20 years as city clerk and treasurer. He also was vice president of the People's Bank and served a short time as county superintendent of education, filling the unexpired term of the late John P Wideman, who had been elected judge of probate. He had been an invalid and confined to his home for the past several years. Mr Calhoun was a Mason, Knight Templar and Shriner and for a long time held offices in three bodies, acting as secretary of Greenwood Lodge No 91, A F M, for several years. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood and active and loyal in his church service. On October 30, 1889, he was married to Miss Josephine George Chiles of Bradley. She with the following children survive him: Mrs Benjamin L Kilgo of Leesville Mrs Augusta D Crum of Greenwood John Chiles Calhoun of Greensboro, NC Sarah Josephine (Judy) Calhoun of Gastonia, NC, city schools William G Calhoun , Jr of Greenwood His only brother, the late Dr R R Calhoun died in Hock Hill in September of this year. A niece, Miss Tommie Duckett, the only child of his only sister survives.
