He passed away on Dec. 23, 2014, in Billings. He passed away on Dec. 23, 2014, in Billings. Bill grew up with his four siblings, Vernon “Sonny” Harms, Jeannie (Harms) Cundall, Viola “Tootsie” (Harms) Nagel, and Vonnie (Harms) Sokoloski, in Circle, where his dad was a barber. Bill helped out at the barber shop from an early age and while still in high school, he earned his barber’s license, being the youngest barber, at that time, in Montana. In 1944, when he was only 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Shipley Bay, an aircraft carrier, during the final months of World War II. When the war was over, the Shipley Bay was part of the Magic Carpet detail, ferrying thousands of troops home from the Pacific theater. In February, 1946, the Shipley Bay was deactivated in Boston, Mass., and Bill made his way home to Circle. On July 3, 1947 Bill and Dolores Chambers were united in marriage at Circle, and they had two children, Glenalee (Glena) and Richard (Rick). Bill continued working as a barber in Circle, Miles City, Boulder, and East Helena. Later, he travelled throughout Montana selling barber supplies and then worked in car sales in Helena. He began his banking career at First Bank in Helena, then worked as a lender for the VA at Fort Harrison and for Great Falls National Bank. His association with the Towe banking group began in 1965, and in 1967 the family moved to Absarokee where Bill became President of what was then Montana Bank. In 1974, Bill and Dolores moved to Red Lodge where Bill served as President of Montana Bank until his retirement in 1982. After retirement, Bill and Dolores lived in Roundup and Fromberg until July of 2013 when they returned to Absarokee to be near their family. Bill and Dolores moved to High Gate Senior Living in Billings in November, 2014. Bill was a trusted, no-nonsense financial advisor for many business owners, ranchers and farmers throughout his banking career. Bill enjoyed riding and driving horses and nearly always had a small acreage where he kept horses, a few cattle, and occasionally a donkey or two. He loved his family very much, especially Dolores, his sweetheart of more than 67 years. Bill is survived by his wife, Dolores Westrum, of Billings; his daughter, Glena Atkins (Tom) of Bozeman and his son, Rick Westrum (Rita) of Fishtail. Five grandchildren also survive: Tory (Torrian) Atkins of Bozemen, Jolene Atkins Strifler (Lee-Jay) of Oregon, WI, Justin Westrum (Rebecca Nadjowski) of Berkeley, Calif., Jamie Westrum Stone (Christopher) of Mendota Heights, MN, and Megan Westrum Yeretsian (Joseph) of Westwood, MA. Bill was blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Ellyse and Connor Atkins, Henley and Cannady Strifler, Ashlyn and Jaclyn Stone, and Marina Yeretsian. Bill is also survived by his sister, Vonnie Sokoloski (Joe) of Circle; his sister-in-law, Vonnie Guldborg of Circle; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed.
