GUNN RITES Funeral services for Dr. William Gregory Gunn, member of a family prominent in medical circles here since the late 1870's were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Versailles Methodist church. Burial was in the Oak Park Addition of the Versailles cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Val B. Strader, assisted by the Rev. J. L. Freeman, pastor of the Christian church. The entire front of the church auditorium was banked with beautiful flowers of every kind and the floral tribute was so profuse that it was necessary to place many bouquets and sprays in the choir loft. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Garver Searcy and Mr. and Mrs. John W. Nelson sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied at the organ by Mr. Maurice LaRue. Garver Searcy sang "Home on the Range," one of Dr. Gunn's favorite selections. The active pallbearers were W. M. Boles, Hugh Hart, C. H. Smoyer, D. K. Hunter, Rufus Harms, Met Hughes, Dr. M. S. Otten, Burson Keyes and Roy E. Otten. Among the honorary pallbearers were many of Dr. Gunn's most intimate friends, a large number of them from the medical profession. Dr. Gunn died the night of Friday, January 2. He had made a professional call to the home of the late Mrs. Gussie Fuller and had returned to the business district and parked his car in front of the clinic. It was there he died before getting out of his car. A son of the late Dr. Gabriel M. Gunn and his wife, Ella, William Gregory Gunn was born in Versailles on March 25, 1885. He attended local schools and following his graduation from high school, received his medical training at Barnes Medical College, St. Louis, graduating from that institution in 1908. His work there was supplemented by numerous post-graduate courses, many of them dealing with diseases of the lungs. He was a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, his affiliation with that group coming as a result of his knowledge of tuberculosis. In that particular field, he was rated as a specialist. Dr. Gunn was a member of the board of directors of the Mississippi Valley Medical Society and was affiliated with the Morgan County Medical Society, the Missouri State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the Versailles Methodist church and of the Modern Woodmen of America. He had long been active in the work of the Morgan County Tuberculosis Association. Shortly after his graduation from medical college, Dr. Gunn went to Florence, Missouri, where he practiced his profession for about two years, and it was there that he was stricken with tuberculosis. In an effort to regain his health he went to Uvalde, Tex. Later he went to Colorado Springs, Colo., where in addition to being a patient, he was a staff member of the tuberculosis hospitals maintained by the Typographical Union and the Modern Woodmen of America. He returned to Versailles in 1916, but it was not until 1923 that he resumed his normal work as a physician. Together with his brother, Dr. A. J. Gunn, who graduated from Barnes Medical College in 1904, he established the Gunn & Gunn Clinic in Versailles. The clinic is considered one of the best arranged and equipped in this section of the state. Dr. W. G. Gunn was twice married. His first wife, the former Katherine Hardy, died during the influenza epidemic in 1917, and their only daughter, Florence, died in 1932 after a long illness. On February 22, 1933, he was united in marriage with Miss Beatrice Sherrill, who, together with the one brother, Dr. A. J. Gunn, and a sister, Mrs. Walta Franse, both of Versailles, survive. He is also survived by two nephews, Jack Gunn, medical student at Washington University, St. Louis, and George Gregory Gunn, pre-med. student at Missouri University; and two nieces, Mrs. William Carr, Eldon, and Mrs. Archie Roark of this city. Hundreds of persons unable to get inside the church stood reverently outside while the service was in progress. A loud speaker system, provided by Kidwell's Service, carried the entire service to them."
