Barclay, 64, for nearly thirty years a resident of Coffin's Grove township near Masonville, died suddenly of a heart attack in the barn on his home farm Sunday morning, July 10, 1949, his lifeless body being discovered by members of his family after he had been absent from the house for some little time. Word of Mr. Barclay's death came as a great shock to his family, neighbors and friends, for it was wholly unexpected and unlooked for. Funeral services for Mr. Barclay were held at the Gill chapel in this city on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Robert Butler officiating, and interment was made in the Masonville cemetery. A son of George and Martha Crawford Barclay, pioneers of Dewitt county, Illinois, Mr. Barclay was born there on Nov. 25, 1884. His early life was spent in Champaign, Ill., where he received his education, and in young manhood, in company with his father, brother and sisters, he came to Masonville and located on a farm near that village. On March 25, 1912 he was united in marriage with Fern Lee, and to them were born two children, Dorothy and Donald, of this city. In addition to his wife and children Mr. Barclay is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Leo Maroney of Masonville and Miss Elsie Barclay of Manchester; a brother, O. R. Barclay of this community, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, John and Herbert Barclay, and a sister, Mrs. Edna Roff. Mr. Barclay's sudden passing brings to a close a life of complete devotion to his family and of unremitting industry. He was a man of high character and exemplary life who enjoyed the entire confidence of his community and was highly thought of by all who knew him. His wife and children, who are most deeply affected by his death, have the profound sympathy of countless friends in the loss of a devoted husband and father.
