Peters, generally known in the city as Bob Peters, passed away Sunday morning shortly after eight o’clock in his room in the Swihart apartment located on North 7th street. He had not been in ill health up to the time of his death. The late Mr. Peters came to Miles City some years ago from Powder River county. While here he married Martha Pugh, who passed away in 1934. The step-children surviving include Chester and Ernest Pugh, and a step granddaughter, Mrs. William Witcher. Born in DeKalb City, Mo., on Nov. 29, 1854, according to the records in the offices of public welfare. Mr. Peters when a young man went with his father to Nebraska where they settled for a period, then went across the line into Kansas where as a young man he engged in ranching and buffalo hunting. During his career young Peters was entrusted with carrying a message to Benteen, then marching with General Custer from Fort Abraham Lincoln, near Mandan N. D. which he was to deliver to the addressee somewhere in the Yellowstone river valley, which was before the Custer Battle, is a story Mr. Peters often told. Defeated in the delivery of the message Peters wound up in Fort Hall in Idaho and learned of the defeat of Custer in early July 1876. Arrangements have been made for conducting the funeral services from the Graves Chapel on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 2:30 o’clock, it is announced. Internment will take place in Custer county cemetery by the side of his wife, who preceded him in death. The Rev. George Reid of the Methodist church will officiate at the final rites.
