Description	:	William H. Fessenden was 21, and living in Mitchell Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. H of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Dec 31, 1863. He was mustered into federal service the same day. He served through the rest of the War, and mustered out on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta with the rest of his company. Fessenden was born on a farm near Amboy, Lee County, Illinois, March 29, 1842, where he lived until fifteen years of age, when with his parents he moved to Osage, Mitchell County, Ia. Here he grew to manhood. "On December 31, 1863, he enlisted in Company H, Fourth Iowa Veteran Cavalry. Soon after his enlistment his company was mustered into active service with General Winslow under Major General A.J. Smith's division. "He participated in the capture of the following fortified cities and battles: Ripley, Guntown, Ripley Second, Ripley Third, Cherry Creek, Harrisburg Roads, Tupelo, and Memphis, and was in the last campaign of the war when General Winslow made his famous raid through the heart of the confederacy, taking the fortified cities of Eastport, Miss; Tuscaloosa, Selma, Montgomery, Columbus, Macon, and Augusta, Ga., and ended by the capture of Jefferson Davis and other rebel leaders. "General Winslow closed the campaign with the following order: 'Headquarters First Brigade, Fourth Division, Cavalry Corps, M.D.M., Macon, Ga., April 22, 1865. Soldiers: The brevet brigadier general commanding congratulates you upon the success which has crowned your efforts. In one month you have marched six hundred miles, engaged the enemy in force four times, completely routing him on each occasion. You have captured on field of battle 3,100 prisoners, 11 stands of colors, 33 guns, 25 caissons, and 3,500 small arms. You have aided in destroying vast arsenals, foundries, factories, workshops with their contents. The enemy cannot recover from these terrible blows. You have proven that cavalry can successfully assault fortified positions. Dismounted, you drove the enemy in greatly superior numbers from his strong works in front of Columbus. Mounted, you dashed through his lines, astounding him by your audacity and its results. While we rejoice let us not forget the fallen. By command of Brigadier General Winslow, A. Hodge, A.A.A.G.' "He was married December 31, 1863, to Martha L. Rice of Osage, Ia., and soon after returning from war settled on a farm three miles north of Osage. While living here five sons, and one daughter, were born to them, and in April, 1882, with his family, he moved to Dakota territory, where they settled upon government land and developed a good farm five miles northwest of Columbia. His health failing, he rented the farm and lived a short time with his son, Adelbert, three miles west of Houghton. "In 1905, with his wife, he moved near Calgary, Alta. [Alberta, Canada], and lived with their only daughter, Mrs. C.K. Spurr, for five years. Returning, he moved to Houghton, where he erected a home and lived until his death. "Born and reared in the frontier, his lot has been that of a pioneer of a practical and constructive nature, which is most necessary to state and home development. He was by direct descent of the family line through Nicholas Fessenden to John Fessenden of Canterbury, Eng., who came to America in 1641 and settled in Cambridge, Mass. "He was a member of the Ralph Ely post of the G.A.R. of Columbia, also of the Union Veterans of Aberdeen. His death was not altogether unexpected as his health has been gradually failing. He arose as usual Monday morning and was outside the house a short distance when he was heard calling for help; his wife came to his assistance and helped him into the house, where he expired in a few minutes. "He leaves a wife and the following children and relatives to mourn his departure: William H. Fessenden, Wetonka; A. Fessenden, Haughton; Earl T. Fessenden, Columbia; Etta M. Spurr, Carstairs, Alta; Charles A. Fessenden, Didsbury, Alta; Wilbur C. Fessenden, Bellingham, Wash.; and two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Hurd, Northwood, Ia.; and Mrs. J.H. Ely, Gary, Ind.; also fourteen grandchildren. "Short services were conducted at the home in Houghton. Church services were held at Columbia, Rev. A.J. Tiffany of Aberdeen conducting the same. Interment was made in the Columbia cemetery, members of the Robert Anderson post of Aberdeen and other old soldiers acting as pallbearers and conducting the last rites." William is son of Thomas and the family is listed in The Fessenden Family of America by Edwin Fessenden and his daughter Elizabeth Washburn on pages 113-115."
