HAAS Special to The Gazette Central City, Iowa, April 8--William H. Haas was born at Pittson, Pa., May 12, 1834 and died at his home in Central City, Iowa, March 28, 1913, aged 78 years, 10 month and 16 days. He lived in Pennsylvania until 2 years of age wen (sic) he immigrated to Indiana, where he remained for two years, and then came to Iowa, first to Jones county but later moved to Linn county. He helped to build the old mill and was the first man to operate the sawmill, sawing a large share of the lumber for the first grist mill. In 1863 he was united in marriage with Miss Virginia Gillian. To this union six children were born: Charles, Mamie, Frank, Josephine, Paul and Irma. Mamie and Paul preceded the father in death, while the other four together with his devoted wife, remain to mourn his departure. All except Josephine were with him at the close of his life. Mr. Haas was a man of strong convictions and with the courage of his convictions, a good neighbor, a good friend, a loving husband and kind father, and above all was known as thoroughly honest. Coming to this country in young manhood he became one of the pioneers who found it a virgin wilderness which he helped to develop into the splendid commonwealth of today. By his industry and frugality he gained a competency, so his declining years were full of peace and plenty, but better than all other things gained, he had a warm place in the hearts of his legion of friends and acquaintances. The funeral was held at the residence Sunday afternoon, March 30, where the greater portion of the elder residents of Central City gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. The sermon was preached by Rev. James A. Smith. Interment at Mount Clark cemetery.
