The whole community, and more especially the German portion of it, was profoundly shocked last evening, by the announcement of the death of William Heckelnkaemper, and old and highly esteemed citizen of this city, which occurred at a quarter before six o'clock, at his residence on Ninth street. On Wednesday afternoon he complained of feeling unwell, and grew worse so rapidly that Dr. Shepard was summoned. He pronounced his disease inflamation of the kidneys, and administered remedies for the purpose of aleviating his pain. But his condition grew rapidly worse, until yesterday afternoon, when the doctor pronounced the end near. His death was painless, and he passed away surrounded by his family, just as the light of day was fading in the western sky. Mr. Heckelnkaemper was born in the province of Westphalia, Prussia, on the sixteenth of April, 1836, and was forty four years old at the time of his death. He came to the United States when he was sixteen years old, and located in Chicago, where he remained for a short time, and then moved west. After visiting several States, he finally located in St. Louis, and engaged in the grocery business. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the St. Louis Home Guards, and was with Gen. Lyon in the famous capture of Camp Jackson, early in 1861. Of this incident in his personal history he was justly proud. He came to this city in 1864 and opened a billiard hall, which he operated for about three years, and then removed to Seneca, Kas., where he lived but a short time; and returned to Atchison. He then opened the bottling establishment, which he has since successfully conducted. Mr. Heckelnkaemper was one of our prominent citizens. For four years he was a member of the City Council, and was also a candidate for the Legislature. He also served in the Board of Education. Among the Germans he was highly esteemed as a man of more than ordinary intelligence, full of kindly feeling, honest,k just and generous, and his sudden death has filled their hearts with gloom. He was one of the original members of the Turner Society, and that organization will attend his funeral in a body. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon, from his late residence on North Ninth street, and the remains will be interred in the Mt. Vernon cemetery.
