Highland Recorder September 24, 1943 W. H. LUNSFORD DIES VERY SUDDENLY William H. Lunsford, sixty-two, prominent merchant, churchman, and business man succumbed to a heart attack at four-thirty p. m. Wednesday, September 22, 1943, shortly after he reached the doctor's office of Dr. Fox, for relief from an acute attack of indigestion, which he thought had developed following his noon meal. He was a son of the late Mr. Joshua Lunsford and Mrs. Lavenia Lunsford, and was born June 22, 1881. His early life was spent in the Hightown community and shortly after his graduation from Dunsmore Business College, along with his parents he moved to Monterey, where he has since resided, and been connected with the mercantile firm, J. Lunsford and Sons. He married the former Miss Helen Campbell, daughter of Mrs. Annie Campbell and the late Dr. Oscar Campbell, thereby two of Highland's first and leading families were united. Mr. Lunsford had been an active and enthusiastic worker in all civic and church undertakings. He was vice-president of the Red Cross and at one time or another had filled with honor all offices of the Monterey Methodist church. He was a charter member of "The kingdom Builders", a layman's group, and as a member of it had appeared as speaker on many church programs. As a newspaper reporter, he was considered very good. He reported for the Highland Recorder for some time, and since 1937 had been the daily reporter of the Staunton News Leader. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, had been registrar of Highland county for a number of years. The county has truly sustained a loss in the passing of W. H. Lunsford. Besides his widow he is survived by three children: Mrs. Herbert L. Mackey, at home; Mrs. Hunter B. Wiltshire of Richmond and Harry William Lunsford of the U. S. Coast Guard, stationed at Brooklyn New York; one sister, Mrs. Bertie Trimble and one brother, Harry C. Lunsford, both of Monterey. A sister, Mrs. Cora Eastham and a brother Jacob Lunsford preceded him in death some years ago. Funeral services will be held at the Monterey Methodist church Friday afternoon, September 24 at three o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. L. P. Foley. Interment will take place in Monterey cemetery. Highland Recorder January 5, 1894 Mr. J. Lunsford returned from Baltimore, Wednesday, where he spent a couple of weeks at Johns Hopkin's Hospital in the interest of his health. His daughter Miss Cora accompanied him. Highland Recorder May 4, 1900 J. Lunsford, Esq., with his family, has moved to Monterey and we are pleased to have them, for the county holds no better people. As Mr. Lunsford holds interests in both town and county he will keep in touch with both and assist in the advancement of both. Highland Recorder January 2, 1903 Notice of Dissolution To the public: The partnership here-to-fore existing between C. W. Trimble and J. Lunsford - doing a general merchants business under the firm name and style of ''Trimble & Lunsford," is this day dissolved by mutual consent and agreement: and all debts due said firm are still owned and will be collected by either the said C. W. Trimble or J. Lunsford. Thanking you for past favors we are, Respectfully, C. W. Trimble, J. Lunsford. To The Public The firm of "Trimble & Lunsford'' having this day dissolve partnership and W. P. Campbell having become the successor of J. Lunsford, the retiring partner, the mercantile business at the old stand of Trimble & Lunsford will here after be conducted under the style and firm name of "Trimble & Campbell." The new firm will conduct the business as here-to-fore carrying a first class stock of goods in all lines.
