Feb 6, 1908 - Carroll Times - "Billy" Smith, one of the popular young business men of the town was reported ill with pneumonia early this week, but no one believed that the rugged looking man would be a victim. The heart action seems to have been affected and he sank rapidly, passing away at noon yesteray. He was about 42 years old and leaves a sorrowing wife surviving him. The funeral will take place under the auspices of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at two o'clock Sunday aftemoon from the Presbyterian church. The family is doubly bereft now, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Smith having died near Pierre, S D., early this week. Feb 13, 1908 - Carroll Times - The funeral of W.H. Smith, whose sad death Wednesday noon, Feb. 5, 1908, we briefly mentioned last week, was held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon. The large expected attendance made it adviseable to have the funeral obsequies take place at the M.E. church, the choir of which rendered touching selection for the occasion. Cliff Aerie, No. 1032, Fraternal Order of Eagles of this city had charge of the remains, Rev. C.J.W. Triem preaching an able, impressive sermon and conducting the solemn obsequies. The pall bearers were: Will Ludwig, Fred Hannasch, John Ahrens and R.J. Hamill of Carroll, Andy Bergman of West Side, and Harry Guhne of Vail. As departed had expressed a wish in his last hours to be buried as near George Nestle as possible, this wish was complied with, and the two graves hold dust that, while animated by their buoyant spirit, formed two kings of good fellowship in this city. It was in token of this thought that the casket of Billy Smith was fairly buried under floral tributes and beautiful emblems from brethern of the Eagles lodge and others whose friendship dated back to days of boyhood and early maturity. W.H. Smith was born at Franklin Grove, Illinois, Oct. 28, 1864, he was therefore 43 years, 3 mo. and 10 days old at the time of his death. Jesse B. Whitney, in whose family the elder Smith, "an Irish gentleman though in plain clothes" was employed for many years, can many incidents of Billy's early life. At the age of ten he became one of the Whitney family, so to speak, a chum and school mate of the younger children and an employee at regular wages as he grew older. From the home of the family at Franklin Grove, Illinois, the departed came here in the early eighties as a lad of 19 and became shipping clerk and an all around favorite in the growing business of Whitney & Co., wholesale fruit dealers and commission merchant*. He remained there until the firm went out of business, when Billy became affiliated with S.T. Harvey & Sons, wholesale liquor dealers and represented them here for many years. On December 5, 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Tena Meyers of Breda, and their union was a most happy one. Departed was a good loving husband and his kindly nature was manifested towards all who came in contact with him. All who had met him felt that "Billy" was a man they would like to meet again. Thus he went through life with a good word and kindly feeling for all. If it is true as has been said that the best way to prepare for another life "is to make somebody happy in this," our departed friend strove incessantly to carry out that idea. He cheered the downhearted, aided those in need, and was a friend indeed to the poor and wronged. He was charitable and generous and in giving to worthy objects never asked for the creed as a condition of his gift. While we are bowed in grief at the early death of him to whom life seemed to hold out so many promises, we can draw consolation from his happy state of mind that saw hope's eternal star beyond the shadows that crept over him while life seemed sunniest and its future richest in the rewards for early toil. Loved ones weeping at the grave will ever cherish the thought that he left hearts brighter and spread the gospel of brotherhood by his many deeds of kindness and friendship. As he daily added to the sum of human joy, he wove a chaplet of generous deeds that now cling like a flowering vine around his memory. They are a fitting tribute to place on his tomb, deathless blossoms of life's noblest impulses. Besides the distracted wife there survive departed a brother, Jos. Smith, Joliet, Illinois; a sister at Cleveland, O.; and one at Cortland, N.Y. The Times extends to all of them the warmest sympathy.
