Description	:	Buried in Martins Brandon Parish, probably in an unmarked grave in Martin's Brandon Episcopal Church Cemetery, Prince George County, VA. He was a Captain in the Continental Army until about May 1778 and then later a Major in the Virginia Militia. He was a Company Commander in Gen. Nathaniel Greene's 6th Virginia Regiment; Fifth Division; 2nd Virginia Brigade. Served at Valley Forge. Crossed the Delaware River with George Washington in an Advance or Bridgehead unit. According to Church records, he was actually married to Betty Symonds October 31, 1780, in Poole Parish, Dorset, England. After the Revolutionary War he was sheriff of Prince George County, Virginia, and later a colonel in the Virginia militia. Regt. on the Contl. Estab. in the old Revolutionary war, from 1st Jan., 1776 till some time in the month of March, 1778. That William (or Billy) Haly Avery entered into the army the same day as First Lieut. to the company in which I belonged; that in a few months the said Avery was promoted to the rank of a Captain in the same Regt.; that we went on together to the Northward; that the said Avery served the whole time as Captain in the regiment. I left him in that command when I was discharged as above stated (Mar., 1778). That in May or June, 1779, I saw the same Avery, at Cabin Point (Va.) and had conversation with him, when he informed me that he was on leave of absence, for the first time, to see about his affairs; that he would return shortly to the army.
