Attorney W. S. Tipton received a message Thursday advising him of the death of his uncle, the late Capt. W. H. Sutherland, which occurred that morning at 10 o'clock at his home at Hillsville.
He had been ill aibbut ten days from pneumonia, from which, because of his advanced age, 85, there was little hope of his recovery. The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock in Hillsville.
The death of Capt. Sutherland removes one of the oldest and best known men in Carroll county. When a lad of about 15 years his father moved the family from Raleigh county, N. C., to Carroll, where the deceased grew into manhood and spent his life, the other members of the family, with the exception of Mrs. Katherine Tipton, mother of our townsman and Capt. Sutherland going West and locating.
He enlisted in the Confederate army and the title he bore after the War was in recognition for his distinguished services in the cause of his Southland. After the surrender he returned to the home of his adoption and was most successful as a businessman.
His standing in his county is reflected by his 46 year tenure of the office of the clerk of the court, having been county clerk under the old court regime and of the circuit court under the present court system doubtless having served longer in this capacity, than any other Virginia clerk. He took an active interest in the Confederate organization both in the State and the U C. V.'s, always attending the reunions when it was possible to do so.
He was one of a family of three brothers and two sisters. He was thrice married, his first wife dying a number of years ago, leaving one daughter, Mrs. B. 0. Howard, of Floyd Courthouse. Four children born of his second wife survive: Dr. E. L. Sutherland, Roanoke: Mrs. C. E. Lundy, Raleigh, N, C.; Mrs. Dr. Rutraugh, Floyd Courthouse, and Mrs. Alice Blahkenship , Hillsville. His third wife, nee
Wampler, of Wythe county, also survives, they having been married in Pulaski several years ago.
Capt. Sutherland was a man of Southern chivalry and true to the character of a Southern gentleman, who numbered his loyal friends by the hundreds. He was remarkably well preserved for one who had more than passed the fourscore years of life, and had always enjoyed excellent health. His loss to the community in which he had been so active a figure will be keenly felt and his familiar figure about the county seat of Carroll will be greatly missed.
