Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Interment will be in the Clarks Cemetery with full military rites. Bill was born on Oct. 6, 1945, at the hospital in Osceola to William and Barbara (Wurtz) Kohl. He grew up on a farm near Clarks, attended District 7 School and Clarks Public School, graduating from Clarks High School in 1963. After attending the University of Nebraska for a year, he returned to farming with his father until he enlisted in the Air Force in December of 1965. On Sept. 24, 1966, he was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Marie Fairbairn. William began his career in the Air Force as an Intelligence Analyst, then an analyst evaluator and training manager, retiring at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in December of 1986. During his 21 years in the Air Force, he earned the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (AF) with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with four Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was the 1976 Air Force Security Service Noncommissioned Officer of the Year. William was a 1977 Graduate of the US Air Forces Europe Noncommissioned Officers Academy where he earned the Honor Graduate, Commandants, and International Affairs Awareness Awards. In 1983, he graduated from the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officers Academy with honors. In March of 1987, William began his nearly 14 year tenure with the National Security Agency during which he served as the training coordinator for several major projects; and in deputy and chief positions at the branch, division, and special staff levels. In 1996, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Prior to his retirement from federal service, he served nearly three years as the Chief of Education and Training at the Aerospace Data Facility in Colorado. During his time in the Air Force and with NSA, William served in Japan, Texas, Vietnam, Maryland, England, and Colorado. He also traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and within the United States. As a father and active member of the communities in which he and his family lived, he was involved in school PTAs, Scouting, youth soccer league, military Protestant chapel, a homeowners association, and high school band boosters. He earned his Bachelor of Arts cum laude from the University of Maryland in 1976, and a Masters in Public Administration with honors from Central Michigan University in 1992. In October of 2000, William retired from nearly 35 combined years of military and federal service and returned to Clarks to assist his aging parents. He shared his fathers love of raising sheep, which he pursued until be became too ill to continue. He served as a member and president of the Clarks Cemetery Board for several years. Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons and a daughter-in-law; William Sean and Christina Kohl of Spring, Texas; and Eric Robert Kohl of Annapolis, Md.; two grandsons, Vaughn and Griffin Kohl of Spring, Texas; two sisters, Linda Klocek of Alden, Minn.; and Arlyce Kohl of Clarks; a brother-in-law and wife, George and Marilyn Fairbairn of St. Paul; two sisters-in-law and husbands, Barbara and Dave Rasmussen of Cairo; and Beverly and Nick Brekenfeld of Norfolk; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bonnie; his mother and father; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Ethel and Robert Fairbairn; his brother-in-law, Hubert Klocek, and an infant niece.
