William Brokens, Monticello, died at the John McDonald Hospital, following an extended illness. William H. Brokens was born Aug. 9,1895, in Boulder Township, Linn county, the son of John B. and Katherine Kuper Brokens. He received his early education in the rural schools near Scotch Grove. Bill Brokens and Anna L. Balster were married Nov. 6, 1917, at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in the Scotch Grove area for several years. After they moved to Monticello, Bill worked at Franklin Equipment and at Farmers Mutual Creamery Co. He later worked at REM Electric. In 1951, he started working as a painter. Bill was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He was baptized Sept. 8, 1895, at SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, and later confirmed his faith on April 9, 1911, at St. John's Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Helen Boss of Ryan; three sons, Edward Brokens and Kenneth Brokens, both of Monticello, and Robert Brokens of Walker; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Sanford of Monticello, and a brother, August Brokens, of Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, one brother and two sisters. Casket bearers were Steve Balster, Robert McCright, John Boss, Greg Brokens, Gary Brokens and Eric Brokens.
