William Harold Carter, devoted husband, loving father, generous grandfather, businessman, and craftsman finished his earthly journey on April 9, 2014. Bill, as he was known by most, was born in Mitchell, SD on October 24, 1933 to Harold and Beatrice (Benda) Carter. He lived in various places throughout his childhood and high school years. Following graduation from Platte High School he worked alongside his father learning the construction trade. In 1956, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country in Germany. Upon discharge he returned to Platte. On December 29, 1958 he married Carol Joan Backes in St. Peter's Catholic Church. To this union three children were born. He continued to work with his father building several houses in the area. He began building cabinets and selling carpet, eventually becoming the owner of Carter's Carpet Center. He enjoyed many repeat customers throughout the years. Upon retirement he enjoyed going on rides around the town and in the countryside. He was dedicated to his family and each of his girls knew if they really needed something, Dad was always there. Grateful for having shared in Bill's life: his wife of 55 years, Carol Carter; two daughters: Cheryl and husband, Larry Sprik, Cindy and husband, Mark Pranger; seven grandchildren; Cassi, Kelli, Carly and Jentry Sprik and Tyler, Andy and Joey Pranger all of Platte; a brother, David (Joyce) Carter; a sister, Sandra (Arlo) Nelson; a brother-in-law, Lawrence (Jessie) Backes; a sister-in-law, Carole Backes; along with several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by: his parents, an infant son, William Barry; a grandson, Ryley William Sprik; in-laws, Jake and Vera Backes; two brothers-in-law: Junior Backes and Robert (Gert) Backes; and a sister-in-law, Rosie (Arthur) Hubers.
