Mr. Gay is survived by his loving family, wife of 66 years, Tommie Ruth Gay; sons, Dennis Gay of Indian Trail and Randall Gay of Newport, NC; daughter, Dolores Broadway of Indian Trail; 5 grandchildren, Chad Broadway, and wife Natalie, Ashley Gay, Jennifer Gay, and Kelly Gay, all of Indian Trail, and Christa Roberts of Raleigh; 3 great-grandchildren, Devon and Lucas Roberts of Raleigh, and Harper Broadway of Indian Trail. "We love you PawPaw!" Additionally, he is survived by a sister, Vadine Smith of Monroe. Mr. Gay was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Reuben and Alma Stack Gay, as well as three brothers and three sisters. He was born on October 18, 1922 and was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific during World War II, on the destroyer, USS Fanning. He was involved in many military campaigns, including the Battle of Iwo Jima. Mr. Gay retired from the Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company (Cast Iron Division) as Maintenance Superintendent, after 40 years of service and served on the Shiloh Elementary School Advisory Board. He was a strong believer in higher education and self-development. The family expresses appreciation to the staff of the Novant Matthews Medical Center, the staff of the Lake Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (especially his good pal, Jennifer Farah) and to the staff of Hospice of Union County. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 6525 Old Monroe Road, Indian Trail. Following the visitation, a procession will leave the funeral home, en route to Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, for a 2:30 p.m. graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the New Salem Baptist Church, 2915 Goldmine Road, Monroe, NC 28110 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
