William Frederick Haseleu, beloved veteran soldier and pioneer of the great northwest, answered the final summons of his Captain at seven o’clock, Saturday evening, August 30, giving the password for the undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns” at Arthur, this state, where he had been an inmate at the Lutheran Samaritan Home for the past ten months. Deceased was born in Pomerania, Germany, on the 31st day of January, 1844, being eighty years and seven months old at time of death. With his parents, he came to America when twelve years old and with them settled at Hubbleton, Wisconsin. Five years later, when a lad of only seventeen, he enlisted in the army and went to fight for the preservation of the Union. He was a member of the 29th Wisconsin, Co. A and served for almost three years. He took part in the famous seven weeks siege of Vicksburg, under General Grant, and was present when the city finally surrendered on July 4, 1863. During all the time he was in the service, he never was wounded nor missed a day. He had some interesting stories to tell of those dark days of civil strife. After the war, they young soldier returned to his adopted state and engaged in farming near Taylor, where in November, 1868, he was married to Miss Louise Weekman, to which union four children were born. In 1882 he came to Dakota Territory, settling in Prairie Township, where he took advantage of all his rights as a soldier in the matter of land holdings. He got a preemption and bought a tree claim in section 24 and later homesteaded a quarter in section 20, same township. Here he and his family lived and labored faithfully and thereby laid up a goodly portion of this world’s goods. He was actively engaged in farming until about the time his wife died, in 1906, since which he has lived at the homes of his children, with the exception of the past ten months. He leaves to mourn his death, two sons, Frank, of Valley City, and Arthur, living south of town, and two daughters, Mrs. Claus Bassen, of Prairie Township, and Mrs. Louise Ehlers, of this village. Besides his children he also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Tesmer, of Colby, Wisconsin, and Mrs. A. Augustine of Menasha, Wisconsin, and a brother, Otto, of Hubbleton, Wisconsin. The remains arrived here on Tuesday’s passenger train and the funeral services were held at the Griswold German Lutheran Church that afternoon. Rev. D. Scholl, pastor of the church, spoke in the German Language, and Rev. Hager, of Arthur, used English. A girls choir sang several very appropriate and touching numbers in memory of the departed hero who slept in the flag covered coffin, and the profusion of flowers gave testimony of the respect in which he was held. Old friends and neighbors acted as pall bearers, namely: Steve Kohn, F. C. Lebahn, Herman Boelter, William Boelter, Fred Miller and Herman Schwartz. Interment was made in the church yard cemetery, at the side of his wife, and the stars and stripes, under which he had son nobly served, were buried with him. He has spent a long and useful life; he has served his nation loyally and well. May he receive the high rewards he so richly has earned.
