Description	:	OBITUARY William Helpman, son of John and Sarah Helpman, was born at Canal Winchester, O., Nov. 17, 1834, and died in the same place, May 29, 1899, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 12 days. On May 11, 1856, he was united in marriage to Caroline L. Volka, in Iowa, where the town of Waverly now stands. This union was blessed with one son and two daughters. Read More	OBITUARY William Helpman, son of John and Sarah Helpman, was born at Canal Winchester, O., Nov. 17, 1834, and died in the same place, May 29, 1899, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 12 days. On May 11, 1856, he was united in marriage to Caroline L. Volka, in Iowa, where the town of Waverly now stands. This union was blessed with one son and two daughters. One daughter, Sarah, died in 1863, at the age of six years. Mrs. Helpman died in 1877. The son, John C. Helpman, resides in Columbus, and one daughter, Mrs. J. B. Outland, resides in Charleston, South Carolina. At the time of the breaking out of the Rebellion Mr. Helpman and family resided in Findlay, at which place he was drafted into the army. On Nov. 1, 1862, he enlisted for three years, joining the 7th Independent Company Ohio Volunteer Sharpshooters, performing the duties of wagoner. On November 8, 1864, he was one of a part of 33 soldiers who were captured in a sweetpotato patch near Kingston, Ga. The men believed that they might have escaped capture if they had not been in uniform. They were captured by a party of guerillas, and were conducted to Andersonville stockade, where Mr. Helpman spent five months and twenty days. About half of the 33 men who were captured belonged to the 7th, and of them only two besides the subject of this sketch came out alive. At the close of the war he was sent to Camp Chase, near Columbus, where he was honorably discharged on June 9, 1865, and a mere walking skeleton, came to his wife, son and daughter, at Canal Winchester, his father, John Helpman, having brought the family here from Findlay soon after the husband and father entered the service. On April 6, 1879, he was united in marriage with Emma Durant, who survives him. He has resided in Winchester since the war, with the excetion of five years spent in Logan. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis. The funeral service was held at the home this (Wednesday) afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. Snider, after which the burial took place in Union Grove cemetery.
