William Aves is of an old and sterling English family, he himself coming to us from the great kingdom across the Atlantic, but the major part of his active and useful life has been spent in America, where he has worked his way from a modest beginning to very comfortable circumstances in his old age, and he is held in unqualified esteem by the people of his community. Mr. Aves was born in Cambridgeshire, England, March 8, 1839, there grew to manhood and was educated; when nineteen years of age he emigrated to the United States. After remaining in New York for some time he went to Canada, then came to Illinois, where he lived about five years. In 1867 he moved to Jasper county, Iowa, and there spent twenty-five years engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1892 he purchased a farm south and adjacent to Melbourne, Logan township, Marshall county, consisting of two hundred and thirty-four acres, and there carried on general farming until 1908, when he purchased an attractive, commodious and modernly furnished home in Melbourne, where he intends to spend his declining years. He has an elegant home and is surrounded by every comfort, having laid by a competency as the result of many years of hard endeavor and good management. William Aves, father of the subject, was born and died in England, his wife, Eliza Eaton, also spending her life there. They were the parents of eleven children, named as follows: James, deceased; Mary Ann, deceased; William, of this review; George lives in England; Eliza lives in England; Charles also lives in the old country; John is deceased; Sarah Ann lives in England; Henry is deceased; two others died in infancy. William Aves, of this review, was married December 3, 1861, to Susan Melbourne, who was born February 4, 1845, the daughter of John and Mary (Eastman) Melbourne, the father born in Lincolnshire, England, and there lived and died; the mother was born in England, but came to New York, where her death occurred. Seven children were born to them, Mrs. Aves being the only daughter and the only survivor; the sons were Thomas, William, Wilson, James and Robert. After an absence from his native land of over a half century, Mr. Aves visited the scenes of his old home, but he saw no such marvelous changes and development as had taken place in his adopted country during that period. He and his wife have made two trips to California, and have gained much from their extensive travels. They have been baptized into the Church of England. Politically, Mr. Aves is a Republican and he has been township trustee for nine years and a member of the school board for three years.
