Belieu was born at Trenton, Missouri, on May 23, 1849, and passed away at Lisco, Nebraska, August 21, 1934 at the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 26 days. On March 4, 1871 he was married to Eliza J. Golden at Rock Port, Missouri, and to this union six children were born, two preceding Mr. Belieu in death; William L Belieu and Anna H Hallsted. Mr. Belieu was the last living child of a family of fifteen children. His father was a Baptist minister and served in the Civil War. He was left an orphan at an early age and made his own way in the world working at any work he could procure. At the age of 14 years he joined the Shelby's Expedition to Mexico, in which he served six months and witnessed the execution of Maximilian and several others. Leaving Mexico he went to Australia, then to Honolulu and back to San Francisco, California. From there he drove an ox team across the plains to Nebraska City, Nebraska. These experiences from childhood to manhood molded a character that was a benefit to any community in which he lived. He practiced medicine in the capacity of a country doctor and there never was a storm too bad or a night too dark for him to go and do what he could in sickness and death. He moved from Missouri to Redington, Nebraska in 1888, and a year and half later he moved to Dawes County where he resided until 1923, when he was stricken with paralysis. Since then he has made his home with his children who, with his faithful wife, have given him the best care possible. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife one son; T.F. Belieu of Lisco; and three daughters; Mrs. Pearl Osborne of Bridgeport, Nebraska, Mrs. Chester Carr of Hemingford, Nebraska and Mrs. R. S. Fleming of Chadron, Nebraska; and one step-daughter, Mrs. A. E. Whetstone of Valentine; 23 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at Lisco, Nebraska, August 22, 1934, Rev. Brewer officiating. Internment was made in the Lisco Cemetery.
