Helmick, 94, of Eldon, formerly of Ottumwa and Altoona, went to be with his heavenly father on July 20, 2014, at his home in Eldon. Bill Henry Helmick, son of Charles and Eva Mae (Murphy) Helmick, was born March 27, 1920, the oldest of 13 children. Bill was forced to grow up faster than most due to some of the challenges that life brought his way. Even though it was not easy, he took over his father’s coal trucking business and provided for his family. On May 27, 1939, Bill was married Juanita Crane in Lancaster, Missouri. This was the first step on their life journey together that included being the loving parents to seven children. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Ottumwa Naval Air Station until his honorable discharge in 1945. When Bill returned home, he began working as a driver for Rock Island Motor Transit in Ottumwa. When the company closed the Ottumwa terminal, he was transferred to Des Moines, where he worked until his retirement. After retirement, Bill and Juanita moved to the farm east of Eldon that they had purchased while working in Des Moines. While many people see retirement as a chance to step away from work, Bill saw it as a chance to continue, and so began his life as a farmer. Throughout his life and right up until his last days with us, you never heard him complain. “Who can I help today?” was always on his mind. His help might have been in the form of a donation, a helping hand, kind words or a silent prayer. Bill enjoyed supporting the Eldon Opera House and purchased Doc Sawyer Park, which he returned to the city and dedicated to his wife, Juanita. He was a kind, generous, loving man who always put the needs of others before his own. His presence will be missed, but his memory will remain in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. Left to honor his memory are his children, Sharen (Don) Howard of Eldon, Karen (Ron) Fosdyck of Ottumwa, Judy Helmick-Grooms of Ottumwa, Terry (Nancy) Helmick of Eldon and Chris (John) Rolf of Altoona; a daughter-in-law, Judy Helmick of Ottumwa; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his wife, Juanita (2002); two children, Kathy and William; a grandson, Jimmy Helmick; and a granddaughter, Debra Helmick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon. Burial will be at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa following the service. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at the Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
