He was born Aug. 5, 1932, at Redfield to Herman and Dorothy (Schroeder) Koester. He was baptized and confirmed at the Crandon Lutheran Church and attended services there until it closed. The family then joined Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. Bill attended school through eighth grade at Meyer Grade School. He then attended high school at Tulare and then Redfield, graduating from Redfield High School in 1950. He attended South Dakota State University until being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Motor Pool in Korea, spending 18 months hauling freight below the front line. He was honorably discharged and returned to the family farm and began farming with his parents. He married Dolores Meyer of Tulare in 1956. They farmed east of Tulare on the family farm and raised four children. In the early 1980s Bill went to Kansas to run a large feed lot. He enjoyed buying camels for the ranchers (used to keep the brush down) during that time. He returned to the family farm in 1989 and assisted with the work for several years. Dolores died in 1995. In March 1996 Bill married Berniece Sorensen of De Smet. They farmed for several years, later moving to De Smet. They enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and spending winters in Arizona, where they met and made many new friends. Bill enjoyed farming, flying, fishing at South Whitlock and golfing in Arizona with his special friends. Survivors include his wife: Berniece Koester, De Smet; his children: Shawn Koester, Redfield, Ann (Todd) Bushong, Tulare, Galen (Deanna) Koester, Redfield, and Todd Koester, Redfield; three step-daughters: JoAnn (Bob) Flynn, Rapid City, Karen (Gary) Springer, De Smet, and Lisa (Don) Shepardson, Brookings; three sisters: Della Vivien, Thousand Oaks, Calif., Elnora Fox, Blue Springs, Mo., and Phyllis (John) Wilker, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and 15 step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife: Delores, one brother: Walter, one granddaughter, and one step-great-granddaughter. Redfield Press Jul 26, 2007
