Read More	William Henry Cahail was the son of Jacob Leonard Cahail and Sarah Shelpman. He married Gazetta Sumner on September 6, 1868 in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He married Clara May Estabrooks on December 18, 1915 in Marshall County, Iowa. “When William Henry Cahail, known to his intimates as ‘Billie’, answered the summons of the Great Reaper and took his departure to the realms of bliss and happiness, our town lost one of its best citizens. And while we would not call him back to the pain and suffering of this life, we deplore his going and mingle our tears and sorrow with those who weep and are saddened. January 22, 1923, the unseen messenger, ‘that rides on every passing breeze and lurks in every flower’, beckoned him away from the loved ones. But while we grieve, we know he is better off, for he was a genuine Christian gentleman, having made his peace with God, and is now singing the glad song of the redeemed that have gone on before. Yes, death touched him and he slept, but only to awaken in glory. W.H. Cahail had hosts of friends and few if any enemies. He was revered by all who knew him and respected for his integrity and noble traits of character. He will be missed, not only by his wife and children, but by our entire community. William Henry Cahail was born Jan. 14, 1849, in Henry County, Iowa, and died at Guthrie Center, Iowa, Monday, Jan. 22, 1923, aged 74 years and 8 days. His boyhood was spent in Washington County. It was here that as a lad of scarcely fifteen summers, he heard the call of his country and enlisted in the Federal Army, in Company H, 2nd Iowa Volunteers. He was one of the youngest boys in the Army, but he took his place along with men much older and served until the end of the war. He marched to Washington and took part in the great review. At the close of the war, he settled in Poweshiek County, where he was united in marriage to Miss Gazetta Sumner, who died Dec. 4, 1914. To them were born five children, O.D. of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Allie C. Hafner, deceased, Oct. 1914, Mrs. Birdie Bankert of Bancroft, S.D., Ernest E. of Appleton, Wis., and Rex Ed of California. Fourteen grandchildren also survive. In 1884, he came with his family to Guthrie Center where he engaged in farming in Seeley township until 1900, when he was elected by the county to serve as County Treasurer, in which office he served for two terms. He afterwards engaged in business, opening a real estate and insurance office, in which business he continued until his death. In December 1915, he was united in marriage to Clara Day Miller, who survives him. Mr. Cahail was the second child of Jacob Leonard and Sarah Cahail. His brothers, all of whom survive him, are F. Marion of Panora, J. Wesley of Guthrie Center, Calvin C. of Kansas, and David L. of Guthrie Center. Besides these, there are three half-sisters, Mrs. Etta Hesser, Mrs. Anna Draper of Chicago and Mrs. Eva Kelley. For nineteen successive years, Mr. Cahail was a member of the local school board and was always interested in educational affairs. For fourteen years, he followed the profession of teaching. He belonged to the Tracy Post No. 62 of the G.A.R., of which for a number of years he was Quartermaster. He was also Secretary of the Soldiers Relief Commission. For over 51 years, he was a loyal Odd Fellow during which time he filled every office in the gift of the order. Three years ago in April, he, with his wife and son, united with the local Presbyterian Church on profession of his faith in Christ, and at the time of his death, was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the church. He was ever faithful and loyal to all its services as long as health permitted and he took a special delight in the weekly prayer meeting. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian Church. During the services, all business houses were closed. The church, although packed to its utmost capacity, was inadequate to hold those in attendance, and while some returned home, many remained on the outside.” The Times, Guthrie Center, Iowa, February 1, 1923
