Charles, who has been employed as a boilermaker in the Northwestern shops here for the past four years, died at his home in this city at 12:30 last Friday morning. For more than a year he had been in failing health and at times suffered much. However, it was only a few days ago that he was compelled to give up his work and he was only confined to his bed for a week, but the decline was rapid and the end came swiftly. After a very determined fight he realized that he had lost in the contest and fell asleep early Friday morning and entered upon that eternal vacation from which none ever return to resume their former duties here. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home, in charge of Rev. J.W. LaGrone of the Methodist Church, while the service at the grave were conducted by the Masons with D.K. Benett acting as Master of the lodge and giving the oration. A goodly number of Masons were in the line of procession and the pall bearers were selected from among the members of the Shrine. The floral offerings were beautiful. William Henry Charles, son of Fred and Lillie Charles, was born November 1, 1879 at Columbia City, Indiana and died at his home in Hawarden, Iowa December 3, 1926, at the age of 47 years, 1 month and 2 days. Mr. Charles grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birthplace and then came west and settled in Kansas where he entered the service of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in which service he continued until the summer of 1922 when he, together with his fellow workmen, was called out in the nationwide strike of railroad shopmen. Soon thereafter he came to Hawarden, and entered the service of the Northwestern since which time he has made his home in this community where he made many friends both among his fellow workmen and among the men generally of the town. On January 1, 1909, he was united in marriage with Miss Lottie Louise Rudy at Downs, Kansas. To this union have been born four children, Helen Irene, Dorothy Louise, Frederick William, and Margaret. Helen and Dorothy are members, respectively, of the Junior and Freshman classes of Hawarden High School, while Frederick is a little past 3 years, and Margaret is just 2 months old. Besides the railroad fraternities with which he had been identified, Mr. Charles was an active member of several branches of the Masonic fraternity and only recently attended meetings of the Consistory and Shrine in Sioux City, and was held in high esteem by his brothers. He is survived by his wife and four children, already mentioned, his aged father, Fred Charles, and one sister, Mrs. Harry Evans of Toledo, Ohio, and one brother, Ralph Charles of Maumee, Ohio. His sister, Mrs. Evans, was summoned here last week and was with him during the final days of his life. The friends of the family feel very keenly this great loss and share their sorrow with them.
