The deceased had not been well for several years, but the illness which ended in death lasted less than a week. The day before he died he was thought to be getting better. The funeral services took place from the M. E. Church of this city Sunday and the remains of the old soldier were laid tenderly to rest in Greenhill Cemetery. The funeral service preached by Rev. A. J. Jolly was one of the best ever delivered in Alexandria. The Post and Relief Corps were in charge of the details and the church was crowded with those anxious to do the last honors to the old veteran. William H. Lee was born in New Hampshire, March 22, 1836. In 1854 he removed with his parents to Michigan where he lived until he went to Illinois at the age of 23. At the breaking out of the civil war he enlisted in Co. H., 41st Illinois and served two years, eight months and thirteen days. He was in several severe engagements, and as color bearer, planted the first flag on the breast works at Vicksburg Landing. After this battle he was taken sick and sent home on furlough. He was still sick at home when the war ended in 1865. Soon afterward he removed to Iowa, where at West Liberty, in 1866, he married Mrs. Eliza J. Turner, who survives him. Besides a wife he leaves three sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. One of his sons, Bert, is now serving his country at Manilla. Mr. Lee was one of those early pioneers who helped to rock Hanson County in her infancy. When he came in 1872 there was but 52 persons in the county. For six years he was on the board of county commissioners. In his younger days he was a member of the Baptist church, but three years ago he joined the M. E. Church and was a faithful and consistent Christian until the grim destroyer laid an icy hand on the weakened frame and bade him rest.
