Description	:	Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 15 August 1862 at the age of 22. On 24 September 1864, while the regiment was stationed in garrison at Decatur, AL, Pvt. Spafford was assigned to a detachment sent in relief of Ft. Henderson at nearby Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. After detraining, the detachment began fighting to gain the fort, and had made good progress, when the fort was unexpectedly surrendered by its commander. After detraining, the detachment began fighting to gain the fort, and had made good progress, when the fort was unexpectedly surrendered by its commander. Forrest then forced the relief detachment to surrender as well, and Pvt. Spafford was sent to Cahaba Prison. In April 1865 he was sent to a neutral parole camp near Vicksburg, MS, and was exchanged on 22 April 1865. On April 24, he and almost 2,000 other recently released Union prisoners-of-war were crowded aboard the Mississippi steamboat Sultana for shipment home. At 2:00 a.m. on April 27, 1865, when the Sultana was seven miles above Memphis, TN, the boilers exploded, and almost 1,200 people died. He was rescued and taken to the Soldier’s Home in Memphis.
