Harshbarger was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, April 29th, 1813, and died at his home in Tippecanoe Township, Henry County, Iowa, October 29th, 1896, aged 83 years and six months. He was the son of Jacob Harshbarger and Barbara (Kilmer) Tanner. He was married to Lucinda Heck April 20th, 1833, at High Bridge, Virginia, in the Presbyterian Church by the pastor, Rev. Samuel Huston. Later they removed to East Tennessee and in 1847 removed to Iowa, locating near what is now Denova, where they resided until their deaths; his wife dying July 2nd, 1893. To them was born nine children, three of whom are now living: J.H. Harshbarger and Mrs. T.H. Barton of this township, and Mrs. Joel Terrell now living in Kansas. Three children, 36 grandchildren and so as can be ascertained 59 great-grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of a kind indulgent parent. Father Harshbarger had no brothers and sisters, his father dying in infancy, his mother married Jacob Heck and a number of half-brothers were born to him, two of whom, David Preston Heck and John Wesley Heck, live in Jefferson County, Illinois. Rev. Jonathon Lee officiated at the funeral. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers, viz: Elmer, John, and Charlie Brown, Will and Martie Harshbarger and Sam'l Barton. He was laid to rest in the Friends Cemetery Friday afternoon (October 30, 1896). -- Mt. Pleasant Daily News, November 7, 1896, page 1.
