Description	:	William Henry Haywood, II was one of 10 known children of Col. William Henry Haywood Sr. and Charity Hare, he was raised on his father's plantation, Conecanarie, in Edgecombe County (now Halifax). When he was 28 years old, he married Ann Sheppard (also found as Anne Shepherd), the 23-year old daughter of Col. Benjamin Sheppard and Elizabeth Ruffin of Edgecombe County, NC. The couple resided in Raleigh, NC and would have 3 known children: Charity Hare Haywood (1799-1880), who married NC Gov. Charles Manly; Elizabeth Haywood (1805-1850), who married Edward P. The couple resided in Raleigh, NC and would have 3 known children: Charity Hare Haywood (1799-1880), who married NC Gov. Charles Manly; Elizabeth Haywood (1805-1850), who married Edward P. Dudley; and the Hon. William Henry Haywood, III (1801-1852), U. S. Senator, who married Jane Graham. His grandsons, William H. Haywood and Duncan Cameron Haywood were both killed in the Civil War (CSA). W. H. Haywood, Jr. and Ann Sheppard were married 59 years, until his death in 1857 at age 87. Ann survived as his widow another 9 years, passing in 1866 at age 91. They are both buried in City Cemetery. His son, William Henry Haywood, is buried here also noted as William Henry Haywood, "Jr", but he was actually William Henry Haywood, III.
