Former Racing Figure Expires William Kneebs Owned String of Horses; was Jockey William Henry Kneebs, 84, 1610 W. Fourth street, member of a family whose horsed raced on many tracks here and abroad, died Wednesday at a hospital after a two-day illness. Mr. Kneebs and his father, Robert T., owned a string of horses which raced on tracks in Austria, Germany, England and the United States. The younger Mr. Kneebs also was a jockey and rode his last mount in competition at Denver. The father and son had their headquarters here at the old Interstate fairgrounds and also maintained a breeding farm at Wakefield, Neb. The father died at his office at the fairgrounds in December, 1903. Their better known horses included Nellie K., Bethel, Chattan and Elmwood Chief. Nellie K at one time held a world's record for harness racing. Mr. Kneebs was born October 20, 1865, in Wisconsin and came here with his parents at the age of 2. Since the death of his wife, Lucy, November 25, 1939, he had made his home with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Eva Luchsinger. Mr. and Mrs. Kneebs were married November 23, 1886, in Jefferson, S.D. Survivors include a son, William T., of Idaho Falls, Mont., and three other daughters, Mrs. Esther Theeler of Bridgewater, S.D., Mrs. Loretta Hieb of Sioux City and Mrs. Mary Margaret Coburn of Cut Bank, Mont., nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Mr. Kneebs was a member of the Boys of 68 and St. Boniface Catholic church. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic church. Rev. Cloud Billig will officiate. Burial will be in the Floyd cemetery under direction of the Westcott-Doughty-Chandler funeral home. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tonight aft the funeral home.
