H. Loar, a young man employed by Christopher Allen, a butcher in Lonaconing, was struck by a coal train and instantly killed. He was sober and industrious young man and was liked by all who knew him. Cumberland Sunday Civilian: November 20, 1887, p.8 Instantly Killed - A Young Man Meets Death at a Railroad Crossing Wm. H. Loar, a young man employed by Chris Allen in the meat business at Lonaconing, was killed Friday night under the following circumstances: Mr. Loar was driving a one-horse wagon with meat to Midland, a station about two miles above Lonaconing, on the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad. While crossing the railroad at Pebbles' Tannery near Midland, the wagon was struck by a coal train and demolished. Loar was instantly killed, but the horse, strange to say, escaped unhurt. An inquest was held by Squire John Ryan, of Lonaconing, an a verdict rendered to the effect that no one was to blame for the sad occurance. Mr. Loar was about 25 years old and leaves a wife and one child.
