Hey and His Son Lyrton Scammon -- Dec. 21 ----One funeral service was held at the family home Saturday for W.M. Hey, 49 yearsold, and his son, Lyrton Hey, twenty years old, both of whom were victims of the explosion at mine No. 9 near Stone City a week ago yesterday. When the bodies were taken from the shaft they were brought to the J.T. Small undertaking parlors and later to the family home, two and one-half miles north of Carona. Burial was made in the Cherokee cemetery. A widow and her three sons and one daughter are left to mourn the loss of the two victims of the ill-fated mine. The Cherokee Sentinel, Friday, Dec. 15, 1916, page 1: Twenty Killed In Mine What is reported to have been the second worst accident to ever happen in the Kansas coal fields occurred at the Mayor mine No. 9 between here and Stone City on Wednesday afternoon. Twenty men were killed and seven injured. The report was that forty children had been left fatherless and that many families were left unprovided for. The cause of the explosion is a mystery and an investigation will be held by the State Mine Inspector. Workmen from all over the district rushed to the scene and rescue teams were soon busy getting out the bodies. It was a pitiful sight. The families of the miners were upon the ground and whenever a body would be brought up each would think it was their loved one. Women were panic stricken, and some of the foreign women who could not understand English was (sic) kept from the shaft with difficulty. It was feared they might fall in the mine. Clarence Miller, a digger, said the air was bad and he left the mine only five minutes before the explosion. Timothy Reedy, one of the men who had the mine leased was among those in this entry, but escaped without great injury. The list of killed was as follows: W.H. Windsor, Lud Windsor, Frank Windsor, Mat Roth, Chas. Roth, Wm Hey, Lyrt Hey, Rudolph Treiz, J.W. Paige, John Lantroic, Domino Calzo, John Frye, A.H. Roycroft, Carlo Tavernaro, Gregoire Burgy, Paul Konatz, Tony Lroshol, Mike Urisk, Frank Jerino, Paul Lefevre. The injured: Frank Bouret, George Tornary, Tony Steffler, Mon Racy, Floyd Brezovoir, Louis Manley. No. 9 has been an unlucky mine. Several years ago an explosion occurred and killed six men. The Mayor people some time ago leased the mine to Reedy and Ryan, and they have been working about 120 to 200 miners.
