In announcing the death of Mr. Hogan, we record the exit of another of our Revolutionary Patriots, whose heroic services were rewarded by a pension from a grateful country. His death was occasioned by his attempting to bring down a small tree that was lodged on the branches of another, which suddenly gave way, and caught him under it; broke one of his legs and otherwise horribly bruised him, so as to cause his death in a short time afterwards. He married JEMIMA SANDERS in 1780 in Kershaw County, SC. She was born in 1762 in Kershaw County, SC, and died 1836 in Kershaw County, SC. They lived near Smyrna Church. (Revolutionary War Pension Application - US Pension # 20848) He died 21 Apr 1836 in Kershaw County, SC and is buried at Smyrna Church Yard in Lugoff, South Carolina. ******************************** History of Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina: When Europeans began moving into South Carolina, the original inhabitants of the area were the Cheraw and Pee Dee American Indian tribes. The Cheraw lived near the river hill, near present-day Cheraw (now in Chesterfield County), but by the 1730s they had been devastated by disease. Survivors joined the Catawba Confederacy for safety and their name became history. Many of the early settlers around the 1740s in Cheraw were ethnic English, Scots, French Huguenots, or Irish. By 1750, Cheraw had become an established Anglo-American village with a growing river trade, one of the first inland villages. It was one of only six places in South Carolina that appeared on English maps at the time. The Kershaws originally called the town "Chatham", but people never accepted this name, continuing to call it "Cheraw" or "Cheraw Hill". Interesting Fact: The Hogans are a Dalcassian family. Hogan comes from the Irish word meaning young or "Descendant of the young one". It has been claimed that those who bear the name are descended of an uncle of Brian Boru, the Irish High King.
