Mr. Houdesheldt observed his 100th birthday at the home of his son, near Cincinnati, last Jan. 9. He was believed to be the oldest civil war veteran in the state. LIFE PASSED CENTURY MARK JANUARY 9TH County and State Honored County Veteran on 100th Birthday (By C. B. DePuy) Taps was blown yesterday at 1:30 o'clock for Wm. Houdesheldt, at his farm home southwest of Cincinnati and in his death is recorded the passing of one of Iowa's oldest Civil War veterans. The aged farmer's life had spanned the century on January 9 of this year. On the occasion of his one hundredth birthday all of the patriotic orders of Centerville and many from over the state joined hands in doing honor to this fine old pioneer, and soldier. Flowers, messages, tokens and even a large birthday cake found their way to the Houdesheldt home as hundreds of people wished a very happy birthday to the centenarian. A kindly man and a splendid character Mr. Houdesheldt was highly pleased with the remembrances and tokens of the day and they served to brighten and enrich the final hours of his life. Born In Ohio William Houdesheldt was born in Jackson county Ohio and came to this county with his parents in 1854. It was indicative of his character that while his father went on to Decatur county that William decided he liked the rolling prairie land southwest of what is now Cincinnati, and he decided to stay there, while his parents moved on. From that time on Houdesheldt made the southeast portion of this county his home. He was one of the pioneers who helped materially to build the Appanoose county of today. In 1861, when the Civil war broke out Houdesheldt was one of the first to enlist and although he lived where there were some confederate sympathizers he threw his allegiance wholly to the Union army and rode horseback to Numa to enlist. He was assigned to the 36th Iowa Infantry Co. I which was under the command of Captain J. R. Gedney. Not particularly rugged Houdesheldt contracted illness while in the service that caused him to be mustered out in 1862. At that time there was no hint that in this man lay vitality which would carry him beyond a hundredth birthday. He came back to live in a log cabin two miles east and a half a mile south from Cincinnati. Lived With Son It was in 1864 that he united in marriage with Julia Ireland (Irelan) and to this union five children were born, two of whom survive, and are George and Hals (Halse) E. Mr. Houdesheldt made his home in recent years with his son Hals (Halse). Although in frail health often, the pioneer believed in moderation in all things. And this belief aided him in long life. First of all in his creed was the belief that eating lightly was conductive to long life. He stopped smoking at the age of 75 because he felt that his health would be better if he did. He never drank. These things together with a native strong vitality and a kindly easy nature brought him long years. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1912. Because of his distinction as one of the state's eldest Civil War veterans patriotic bodies will participate in the funeral services which will be held at the Christian Church in Cincinnati on Sunday at 1:30 o'clock with the Rev. Luther W. Childs of the First Baptist church of this city officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery at Cincinnati. Members of the W. R. C., the D. U. V., the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Spanish War Veterans and Auxiliary will attend the services. Best, on Thursday afternoon when he was called to the H. E. Houdesheldt home to get the body of his father, Wm. Houdesheldt. From primary highway to the Houdesheldt home Mr. Best had to resume the use of old dobbin and a wagon in order to get the body through the blocked country road to the main highway. William Houdesheldt, son of George and Elizabeth Houdesheldt, was born in Jacksonville, Ohio, Jackson county, on the 9th day of January 1836. In 1854 the family emigrated to Decatur county, Iowa. In a couple of years or so William came to Appanoose county and located in the southern part, near Cincinnati. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union army, Company I 36th Iowa Infantry under Captain J. B. Gedney. He was mustered out in the spring of 1862 on account of sickness. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Ireland (Irelan), and to this union four sons and two daughters were born. In 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Houdesheldt ceased their labors from active rural life, and moved to Cincinnati. On the 5th day of March, 1912, the wife and mother died. For some eighteen years Mr. Houdesheldt continued to live in Cincinnati, his son Geo. and daughter-in-law assisting in making a home. For the past five years the father lived with his son H. E., seven miles southwest of Cincinnati. It was at this place the aged veteran and father departed this life Thursday afternoon at one o'clock, January 30th, 1936, at the unusual age of one hundred years and twenty-one days. Mr. Houdesheldt was a grand old gentleman and was loved and respected by hundreds of people who knew him. He was a man of good and regular habits, and it was to this that he attributed his longevity. Almost half a century ago he accepted Christ as his personal Savior in meetings at the Mt. Olive Christian church. For many years he was a member of the G. A. R. post at Cincinnati, but when the pages of the books there were closed be became a member of the Post at large, at Des Moines, Ia. In death he is survived by two sons, H. E. and George, both of Cincinnati, seven grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his companion, two sons, Johnnie dying in infancy and William Ulyssus, age 47, and two daughters, Mrs. Ida Noble of Bloomfield, who died in 1911, and Mrs. Anna Noble, who died in 1900 at Ottumwa. During the World War two of his grandsons, Glen and Hollye (Hollie) Houdesheldt, enlisted and served their country. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the Christian church in Cincinnati conducted by the Rev. Luther W. Childs. The services was a military one and many of the patriotic organizations participated. A detachment of the National Guards, Company G under Captain C. F. Sandstrom, furnished the firing squad. W. F. Hathaway, of Des Moines, director of grave registration for Iowa, brought words of condolence from Olie Nelson, at Des Moines, commander in chief of the G. A. R., who was unable to attend the funeral of his comrade, being at this time in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Julia Wanamaker, of Marengo, department president of the Daughters of Union Veterans, was also present, bringing a touching word of sympathy to the immediate family and friends.
