Description	:	Bill was born on 6 April 1917 at the Y-4 Ranch in Custer County. His given name was Howard Sylvester Judd, but everyone called him Billy. As a young adult he legally changed his name to William Howard Judd, and everyone called him Bill. Bill attended grade and high school in Custer, graduating in 1935. His given name was Howard Sylvester Judd, but everyone called him Billy. As a young adult he legally changed his name to William Howard Judd, and everyone called him Bill. Bill attended grade and high school in Custer, graduating in 1935. In 1939 he graduated from Yankton College where he majored in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He received his Master of Natural Science Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1968. Following graduation from Yankton College, he taught in Bassett, Nebraska; Turton and Presho, South Dakota; and Tacoma, Washington. During World War II he worked in the shipyards as an Electrician in the Seattle area. Returning to South Dakota, he was employed by Northwestern Public Service and then spent 16 years in the insurance business as a salesman and counselor. This was followed by several years with Sioux Steel Company as a salesman and then in 1963 he returned to teaching at Freeman, South Dakota. In 1966 he joined the staff at Mount Marty College as a science instructor and debate coach, eventually moving into their Admissions Department as a student recruiter. In 1975 he became an Admissions Counselor at Yankton College. In 1977 he moved to Pierre and was employed as a Mine Inspector for the State of South Dakota, retiring from this position in 1983. Bill married Elaine Anderson in Yankton on 25 August 1941; they had two daughters; they divorced about 1946. Bill married Inez Lucille Larson on 29 November 1947 at Rapid City, South Dakota. They had two sons. Inez had been previously married to Ralph Bud Chamberlain with whom she had a daughter. Bill was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, being especially proficient in degree and ritual work. In 1977 he was conferred with the Honorary 33rd Degree. His other volunteer and charitable activities included Explorer Scout Leader, March of Dimes Chairman of Yankton County, served on the State Board of National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, he was a life member of the Elks. Bill was a lay pastoral care worker for the Episcopal Church for over 40 years, beginning his first care giving under The Reverend Father Munck at Christ Church in Yankton, subsequently at Trinity Church in Pierre; and Calvary Cathedral; he served on their vestries, was a Eucharist Minister and Lay Lector. He held many positions with the South Dakota Episcopal Diocese including serving on the Youth and Camp, and Stewardship Committees. In 1983, when Bill and Inez retired to Sioux Falls, he continued his pastoral care work becoming a Stephen Minister for Calvary Cathedral and expanded his work into prison ministry. As a result of these avocations, he attended innumerable Prison Ministry conferences throughout the United States. Bill and Inez returned to Yankton in 1994 and took up residence in their home and he again began representing Christ Church in pastoral care. He completed the CPE course. He also was a pastoral caregiver for Avera Sacred Heart and continued his Prison Ministry both at Springfield and the Federal Prison. The Federal Prison honored him as Volunteer of the Year in 1998. Bill died at Avera Sacred Heart; he had been in ill health the previous four years, following heart by-pass surgery and several strokes. Memorial services were held on January 5, 2008 at Christ Episcopal Church in Yankton with Reverand James Pearson officiating. Masonic Services were also part of the service. He was interred at Garden of Memories Cemetery in a private family burial; arrangements made by Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton. At the time of his death, Bill was survived by his wife of 60 years, Inez; two sons, three daughters, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
