For more than a year he had failed gradually, but his indomitable spirit seemed to defy the inroads of age and disease, and he only succumbed to the inevitable when extreme weakness rendered him powerless to resist. Read More	OBITUARY - DECATUR COUNTY JOURNAL - 10 August 1899 Howard Moore died at his home in Mercer County, MO, four miles west of this place, on Tuesday morning about 9 o'clock, after a long but painless illness. For more than a year he had failed gradually, but his indomitable spirit seemed to defy the inroads of age and disease, and he only succumbed to the inevitable when extreme weakness rendered him powerless to resist. He was born in Grundy county, MO, in 1824 and has resided on the farm where he died, for more than fifty years. His wife, who was a sister of the late J.C. Wasson, died on the 12th of September last. They were the parents of thirteen children, all of whom are now living but two. He was a lieutenant in the 3rd Missouri Cavalry State Militia during the civil war and had been receiving a pension of $17 per month for several years, receiving acerages at the time was granted of about $3,700. He was a remarkable man in many respects and his energy, native intelligence and force of character gave him an influence and prominence that was widely felt. As the principal contestant in the famous state line controversy a few years ago, he gained additional prominence and his name became familiar to everybody who read the newspapers throughout Missouri and Iowa. The funeral took place yesterday, the ceremonies attending the burial at Evergreen Cemetery, this place, by the members of the Jas. H. Rogers Post, of Lineville, and other old soldiers, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives, neighbors and friends.
