Royster (ca. 1834) * Sarah Royster (ca. 1836) * Len Henderson Royster (1840-1912) * William Bertus Royster, CSA (ca. 1843-aft 1865) * Mary Howard Royster (ca. 1846) William Royster died in 1845 at age 41, while still in the prime of his life. His widow never remarried and survived her husband by 35 years, passing in 1880 at age 67. After William Howard Royster's death, his wife Mary remained in Raleigh, supporting her family as a seamstress in Raleigh. Her eldest son, David, became a tailor, while the younger son, Leonard, became a carpenter like his grandfather and later became one of the best-known architect/builders in Raleigh. Although William Howard Royster's life was cut short, several of his siblings made their mark in the history of Raleigh. Brother, David L. Royster (1821-1910), became a prominent citizen in his day, and at one period a leading building contractor. He married Sarah Womble, daughter of Jordon Womble, of Raleigh; and their son, Vitmvius Royster, became the Assistant Clerk of the Superior Court; and daughter Miss Gertrude Royster, was Director of physical education at Meredith College. Another brother, James Daniel Royster (1807-1890), was considered a man of rare intelligence, also prominently identified in his time with the city and its interests. The older citizens remember him as a man upon whose judgment they could safely rely, and in matters of public interest his opinion was always valuable. He was the father of Dr. Wisconsin I. Royster, whose eminence as a physician, as well as a man of profound learning, and the grandfather of Dr. Hubert A. Royster and Prof. James F. Royster, the latter professor of English in the State University. Dr. Hubert Royster enjoyed the enviable distinction of being one of the most learned and skillful surgeons ever in practice at the State capital. Vermont C. Royster (proprietor of the firm of A. D. Royster & Bro.), one of the capital city's most prominent citizens, and a gentleman of superior scholarly attainments, was also a son of James D. Royster.
